Oprah is a well-respected talk show host, producer actress
and so on. At the time of her book club she was being viewed by several million
people in and out of America. I agree that the success of book club selections
were due to her and the influence of her being whom she is. When she first
started her book club she would send several copies of the titles, free of
charge to our library. We had created an Oprah’s Book Club Selection section.
Patrons at the beginning couldn’t wait to see what the new Oprah’s book club
selection was. Just as the sales and the
ranking was high, the library’s circulation for those selections was high.
Outside of the books that were donated, the library would have to purchase
more. Ranking goes according to sales. Well, people were buying just because
the books were Oprah’s suggestions and also several copies of the books were
purchased by Oprah to be sent to different libraries and I’m sure other places
for free. This would boost sales, which would in turn boost book ratings. There
were only a few of her selected titles that I actually liked. I’m sure that as
America was reading her selections this also held true for them which would
then lower sales and rankings. Fewer books were sent to the libraries as time
went on until there were none being sent at all. Which again lower sales and
rankings.
I feel that people were just buying into reading what the
famous Oprah liked just like people buy a gym shoe because a sports player
endorse’ it.
